Srinagar:ย The Panchayat and local body elections scheduled to be held next month are likely to be deferred in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a report published in New Delhi based NDTV, the decision about deferring the elections comes in backdrop of two major mainstream parties National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced to boycott the polls over the issue of Article-35A, which grants special rights and privileges to the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

Quoting sources, NDTV says that the elections for urban local bodies will be deferred to January and a formal decision regarding it is likely to be taken by the State Advisory Council (SAC) headed by Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik today.

Article-35A, which has been challenged in the Supreme Court of India, has brought mainstream and separatists on the same page.
