Srinagar: City center Lal Chowk wore a deserted look on Wednesday as strict restrictions have been imposed by district authorities in wake of Muharram processions.

All the business establishments in the city center are cclose and people had to walk long ways to reach destination as traffic is off the roads.

The district authorities have also decided to put traffic diversions at Radio Kashmir Crossing, Dalgate, Regal Chowk and Fire Service Crossing.

The District administration in Srinagar ordered closure of all schools and colleges in this summer capital of the state on Wednesday.

โ€œThe decision was taken as a precautionary measure,โ€ Officials said.

The restrictions in Srinagar, an official said, was to prevent Muharram processions which remain banned in the area since 1989.
Restrictions have been imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Shergari, Kothibagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Maisuma, and Kral Khud police stations.
โ€œRestrictions will be imposed as a preventive measure in view of eighth day of Muharram to maintain law and order,โ€ Official said.

The traditional Muharram procession used to pass through these areas, but have been banned since eruption of militancy in 1989.
