Anantnag: The killing of two militants in Nowgam area of Srinagar outskirts set off massive protests in Sangam area of this south Kashmir district on Wednesday leaving several people injured.

Scores of people, mostly youth took to streets this morning and staged pro-freedom demonstration after rumours made rounds that one of the two militants killed in Nowgam area of Srinagar was Sabzar Ahmad Sofi.

Shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the protesters threw stones at the government forces, witnesses said.

They said that the forces lobbed tear gas shells and fired pellets to disperse the angry protesters. Many protesters, according to eyewitnesses were injured in the clashes.

The clashes were going on when the last reports came in.
