The body of a man who drowned in the Jhelum River near the Padgampora bridge in Awantipora earlier on Tuesday has been recovered, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Tariq Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Ameerabad, Tral, in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Eyewitnesses told GNS that the man was seen struggling in the water and that bystanders attempted to rescue him but were unable to do so. “I saw him drowning with my own eyes. We even tried to save him, but sadly, we couldn’t,” one of the locals said.

Following the incident, teams from Jammu and Kashmir Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire & Emergency Services launched a joint search operation in the area.

Hours later, the body was recovered from the river and taken into custody for medico-legal formalities. Authorities have initiated further proceedings.(GNS)
