Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Handwara, along with members of civil society, have announced that they will launch an indefinite hunger strike starting Sunday in protest against the government’s decision to relocate GMC Handwara.
Those who will be leading the hunger strike include; Sheikh Mohammad Iqbal, District President, BJP Youth Wing, Shabir Zargar, Senior Leader & Convenor, Nazir Bhat, Former District General Secretary & Ex-Servicemen Cell Incharge, Fayaz Bhat, District President, BJP Kissan Morcha
In addition to BJP leaders, several senior members and representatives of civil society have also extended their support to the protest.
The leaders have further invited representatives of all political parties, beyond party lines, along with civil society organizations, trade unions, transport unions, bar associations, student bodies, and other associations to join them in the strike. They stressed that the issue of GMC Handwara is not political but a collective concern of the entire district.
In a Statement, Sheikh Mohammad Iqbal said: The people of Handwara have sacrificed their land and resources for GMC with the hope of better healthcare and educational opportunities. Relocating the project is nothing but an injustice to the people and Wastage of Tax payers Money, We will not allow this injustice to happen, and our hunger strike will continue until the government revokes its decision.
The indefinite hunger strike will continue until the decision to relocate GMC Handwara is withdrawn.
