A man lost his life and his wife was left in a critical condition after a massive tree was uprooted by strong winds and fell on the couple near the Ganjiwara area of Anantnag town on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq Kujwal, a resident of Brariangan, Shangus. His wife, Marina, remains under treatment at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag in critical condition.

According to officials, the tree was brought down by strong winds, crashing onto the couple and simultaneously disrupting traffic on the busy Lal Chowk–GMC Anantnag road. Police and other agencies swiftly launched clearance operations, partially restoring traffic movement, with efforts continuing to fully reopen the route.

Both victims were rushed to GMC Anantnag immediately after the incident. However, Mohammad Rafiq succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while doctors continue to treat Marina.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated further proceedings.
