Former Baramulla councillor and noted social activist Nighat Mir on Monday extended warm greetings to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, commemorating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
In her message, Mir highlighted the enduring significance of the Mahatma’s ideals, particularly non-violence, truth, and social justice, in contemporary society.
“As we mark this important day, it is imperative to reflect on Gandhiji’s principles and strive to uphold them in our daily conduct,” she said, adding that Gandhi’s philosophy of peaceful resistance continues to inspire movements for justice and equality around the world.
Mir also urged the youth to take inspiration from Gandhi’s vision and actively engage in social welfare and community building. “It is our collective duty to carry forward his legacy by promoting peace, harmony, and mutual understanding,” she said.
To mark the occasion, Nighat Mir said she intends to initiate a series of community-driven activities focused on cleanliness and environmental awareness—areas the Mahatma passionately advocated for.
Calling for unity and active civic participation, she said Gandhi Jayanti is not just a remembrance, but a call to action for building a more just and inclusive society.
