Police detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik from his Maisuma residence just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

A front spokesperson said a large posse of police reached Malikโ€™s Maisuma residence at dawn and took the JKLF chief under detention.

He said Malik has been lodged at police station Kothi Bagh Srinagar.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Kashmir against the Modiโ€™s visit to the state.

The call for shutdown was issued by Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik as a mark of protest against โ€œtyranny and oppressionโ€ during five years of Modiโ€™s rule.

Earlier today, Modi arrived in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir to lay the foundation stone of new terminal building of the airport and inaugurate the Leh University.

Modi, according to Prime Ministerโ€™s Office (PMO), will be visiting all the three regions of the stateโ€” Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir.

He will lay foundation stones for various projects estimated to cost Rs 35,000 crore, and inaugurate projects worth Rs 9,000 crore.
