Srinagar: Police on Monday said that two militants who were killed in morning gunfight at Sopore area of Baramulla district were affiliated to Hizbul Mujahideen and one among them was outfit’s divisional commander.
A senior police official told news agency GNS acting on specific information, police along with army’s 22 RR and 179 Battalion, 177 Battalion, 92Battalion of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Check-e-Brath area of Sopore today morning.
“During searches, hiding militants fired upon joint search party, triggering the encounter,” he said, adding that two militants were killed in the encounter who were later identified as Pervaiz Ahmad Wani resident of Galoora Handwara, the Hizb Divisional Commander and Naeem Ahmad Najar son of Ghulam Hassan Najar resident of Shelpora Brad, Sopore.
“Two AK rifles, three AK magazines, 90 AK rounds, One INSAS rifle, one INSAS Magazine, 13 INSAS rounds and other ammunition were recovered from the encounter site,” the police official said, adding that both the militants were “involved in anti-national and anti social activities”.
The police official claimed that Hizb commander Pervaiz Ahmad was involved in the serial blast on mobile towers in 2015. “He was involved in killing of two police personnel in Handwara market in 2013. He was also involved in attack on Police Post Langate in 2016 and case FIR number 47/2008 under section 307 RPC under section 7/27 IA Act, 18 UL Act of Police Station Handwara,” he added.
