Ramanathapuram, Jan 16 : The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 16 Indian fishermen and confiscated four mechanized fishing trawlers for allegedly fishing in the Island nationโ€™s territorial waters on Tuesday.

Fisheries officials said the arrested fishermen hailed from Mandapam and Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.
They were apprehended for intruding into the Exclusive Economic Zone of Sri Lanka and engaged in illegal fishing in the seas north-west of the Delft Island and north-east of the Katchatheevu Island.

The incarcerated fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai and handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward legal action.

This is the second instance of the Stateโ€™s fishermen being arrested this month by the Sri Lankan Navy.
