Farmers say ’70 percent crops, apple in orchards damaged’

Langate, May 03 : Hailstorm hit several villages in Langate area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The crops were severely damaged and the apple orchards have also suffered huge losses in these villages.
According to the KNS correspondent, amid rains hailstorm hit several villages in Langate area of Kupwara district Thursday afternoon and continued for about 15 minutes. The hailstorm caused heavy damages in the apple orchards and open fields which were blooming with vegetables and mustard.
The villages hit by hailstorm include Sudergund Hangah, Maratgam and adjoining areas.
Locals said seventy percent of crops and apple in the orchards was damaged by the hailstorm.
Despite repeated attempts Minister for Agriculture Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Minister for Horticulter Syed Basharat Bukhari and Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Khalid Jehangir could not be contacted as their cell phones were switched off.
