Srinagar, May 5: To foil press conference of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) on Saturday, authorities put under house arrest chairmen of both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwiaz Moulvi Omar Farooq while JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik was taken into custody.
The JRL, comprising Mr Geelani, the Mirwaiz and Mr Malik, had announced to hold a press conference at a local hotel in civil lines. The announcement was made on Thursday after the separatists held a meeting in the residence of Geelani at Hyderpor.
Mr Malik was arrested from his Maisuma residence and lodged in police station Kothibagh, a spokesperson for the front said.
A spokesman for the HC said a large number of security forces and state police personnel had been deployed outside the Nigeen residence of the Mirwaiz since Saturday morning. The Mirwaiz has been informed that he cannot leave till the further orders.
Mr Geelani also remained under house arrest and he was not allowed to offer Friday prayers in a mosque, his spokesman said. UNI
