Srinagar, May 7 : Amid tense situation over killing of five civilians in security force action in Shopian, the Civil Secretariat, the seat of Jammu and Kashmir government, re-opened in this summer capital on Monday, after functioning in the winter capital, Jammu, for six months as part of the pre-independence practice known as ‘Darbar Move’.

Besides, the Civil Secretariat, other Darbar Move offices, including Raj Bhawan, police headquarters and several commissions, re-opened in Srinagar on Monday.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up outside and along the roads leading to the Civil Secretariat to foil any protests or militant attack.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik had called for a general strike and urged people to march towards Civil Secretariat to hold sit-in against the Shopian killings.

Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in the country which has two capitals so the seat of the government and related offices shift every six months between Jammu and Srinagar as part of the nearly 150-year-old practice known in the state as ‘Darbar Move’.  UNI
