Bengalulru, Jun 4 :In a disturbing trend, as many as 20 farmers have committed suicide in Karnataka due to mounting debt and in the latest incident two of them committed suicide on Sunday.
Official sources said on Monday that the two farmers Ravindra (33) and Nagarajaiah(45) committed suicide in Mandya and Davanagere districts yesterday. The former had borrowed Rs 7.4 lakh loan from cooperative banks and other sources while Nagarajaiah had a debt of over Rs 6.2 lakh. Both had committed suicide due to mounting debts.
Earlier in the last eight days, as many as 10 farmers had committed suicide within three days between previous Sunday and Tuesday, while on Wednesday one farmer and on Thursday and Friday two farmers each had ended their lives due to same reason. On Saturday three farmers had committed suicide. With the addition of two more on Sunday, the farmer suicide count went up to 20 during the last eight days.
The series of farmer suicides comes despite the assurance given by the newly formed Janata Dal(S)-Congress government which had assured to announce a farm loan waiver scheme in the next 10 days. Karnataka has reported second highest number of farmer suicides after Maharashtra in the country.
Opposition BJP had alleged that more than 3800 farmers had committed suicide in the State during last five years when Congress ruled the state.
