Shillong, June 5 : Curfew continued in tension-hit areas of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, even as district authorities said that the situation is slowly limping to normalcy.
“We have decided not to relax the curfew, even as the situation in the areas is slowly limping back to normalcy,” Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, P.S.Dkhar told UNI.
Moreover, he said that night curfew will continue all over the Shillong city from 1600 hours on to 0500 hours until further order to ensure security to other parts of the city.
Dkhar said that the Army is still kept on standby.
“15 companies of central armed police force have been deployed and ten more companies of CAPF are proceeding to Shillong,” they said.
He said that suspension of internet on mobile services would continue besides prohibiting the sale of petrol, diesel etc., in loose jerricans, bottles and any other containers to public by all petrol pumps within the district.
Violence erupted in this city after a skirmish between some women and the driver of SPTS bus at Them Metoer which led to the assault of three persons. The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital and released after first aid.
The parties involved in the skirmish had arrived at a verbal compromise at Cantonment Beat House.
On Friday, the district magistrate imposed curfew in areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Cantonment Beat House from 0040 hours in view of the breakdown of law and order in Motphran, Mawkhar and adjoining areas following the clash.
On Sunday curfew was relaxed for seven hours from 0800 hours in violence-hit areas. However, the mob continued to indulge in stone pelting on security forces. The mob attacked an Under Trial Prisoner van carrying a mentally-retarded person, who was referred to be admitted KJP Robert hospital.
Police also fired several rounds of tear gas at the mob.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today revealed that the state police has found out that there are certain people who are funding the stone-pelters during the last three days in curfew-bound areas.
‘The police have started the investigations and found out that there are certain people who are funding for this agitation. We have found evidence of expensive alcohol being given to them, we have found evidence of money being given to them,’Mr Sangma disclosed to reporters at a press conference.
‘Certain individuals who were picked had confessed that they have been given money to take part in this agitation and they have come there because they have been given money. I must tell that we are already on the job of finding out where the money is coming from, who are those individuals who are distributing money,’ the chief minister said.
