Srinagar, Jun 20  : Train service was resumed on Wednesday after remaining suspended for security reasons for a day in south Kashmir, where situation was tense following the death of a youth in alleged security force firing in Kulgam on Monday evening and death anniversary of Qazi Nissar, Mirwaiz of south Kashmir.
However, trains were running as per scheduled in north Kashmir normally, a senior railway official told UNI.
He said a fresh advisory was received on last night from police to resume all trains in south Kashmir today. Therefore, he said, train will chug on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region as per schedule.
Official sources said advisory to suspend train service was issued following tense situation after the death of a youth Aijaz Ahmad Bhat and injury to another in alleged security force firing on demonstrators at Akhran Nowpora in Kulgam on Monday evening.
There was also a general strike called by Ummat-e-Islami on the death Qazi Nissar, Mirwaiz of south Kashmir. Qazi was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on June 19, 1994 at Dialgam in Anantnag. His son Qazi Yasir, who heads Ummat-e-Islami has called for general strike in Anantnag yesterday.
Train service was resumed in the valley only on Monday after remaining suspended on June 17 as a precautionary measure following stone pelting incident on Jun 16 in Anantnag and other areas.
However, he said all trains were running as per scheduled on Srinagar-Badgam to Baramulla in north Kashmir.
This was the fifth time train service has been suspended partially or fully in the Kashmir valley for security reasons.
