New Delhi, Aug 23 : Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to Election Commission of India (ECI) and Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission on a petition filed by senior Congress Leader Kamal Nath, seeking transparency in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections.
A division bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan asked respondents to filed their replies.
The Apex Court fixed the matter for further hearing to next Friday.
Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Kamal Nath, submitted to the Apex Court that there are 60 lakh duplicate Voters in Madhya Pradesh and the Top Court should pass some direction in the matter.
The petition, filed by Kamal Nath on August 10, is seeking the Apex Court’s intervention and a direction to the ECI that the the vote count should be matched with the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls.
The petition has sought a direction to the ECI and State Election Commission, to take effective measures to ensure free and fair polls in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
