India registered its biggest spike in the novel coronavirus cases and deaths over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday morning.

The country has recorded 265 deaths, taking the total number of coronavirus casualties to 4971, the ministry said.

India registered a staggering rise of 7,964 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 1,73,763, which includes 86422 active patients.

At least 82,370 patients have been cured, discharged or migrated and 4,971 have lost their lives, the minisstry said.

Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state accounting for over one-third of India’s total COVID-19 tally, followed by Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat. (Agencies)
