Srinagar, Aug 22: Inordinate delay in the construction of drainage system sparked protest in Mominabad Batamaloo area of Srinagar city. Locals hit the roads and blocked traffic much to the inconvenience of commuters.

The protesters said that due to the accumulation of sewage water, the locality has turned into a stinking cesspool.

โ€œDuring winters, people from Lane 9 to 17 face a lot of difficulties. Due to lack of drainage system in the area, we have to face various hardships as the area turns into a cesspool after a few centimeters of rain,โ€ said a protester to KNT adding that locals have been craving a drainage system in the area for the last two decades.

The protesters said that despite raising this issue with the administration, nothing concrete has been done so far to redress the problems faced by people. โ€œWe are wandering from pillar to post, visiting every concerned department but all our requests have gone to deaf ears. The foul smell emanating from the accumulated sewage water has shrouded the whole area. Children and elderly persons are the worst sufferers,โ€ they said.

When contacted an official of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) told KNT that โ€˜Detailed Project Reportโ€™ (DPR) for constructing the drainage system in Mominabad Batamaloo has already been completed and work will be started sooner or later. (KNT)
