Srinagar, Aug 17: Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum has condemned the police action on a group of journalists covering a Muharram procession in Srinagar on Tuesday. In a statement issued here JKCSF Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani expressed concern over the thrashing and lathicharge of journalists and also detained a few Shia mourners at Jahangir Chowk in the city who were there to take a procession to mark the eighth day of the 10-day Muharram mourning period.

Media persons be it photo and video journalists always render their professional duties which is evident by virtue of their equipment and the nature of job,Thrashing and lathicharging them is sheer injustice and an attack on the freedom of press, said Wani.

JKCSF demands a probe into the matter and urged upon the stakeholders to allow media professionals of all cadres to perform their duties in a free and fair atmosphere.
