In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering families affected by natural disasters and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, the High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS India) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir divisions for the construction of 1,500 free houses across the Union Territory.

The initiative, driven by the vision of Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha, seeks to restore hope and stability to families who lost their homes during Operation Sindoor, recent floods, and unprovoked cross-border shelling. The MoU signing ceremony was held at Raj Bhawan, Srinagar, and was presided over by the Lieutenant Governor.

โ€œThese houses are not just structures; they represent a fresh start, new dreams, and a new chapter in the lives of affected families,โ€ said LG Sinha. โ€œWhile the human loss is immeasurable, this initiative will certainly help ease the suffering of those who have faced devastating tragedies.โ€

Modern, Smart Homes with Added Welfare Support

Each of the 1,500 houses will be three-bedroom smart homes, equipped with modern features ensuring comfort, safety, and digital connectivity. HRDS India, in collaboration with BSNL, will also provide free internet access to all households, promoting digital inclusion and supporting education and communication needs.

To further support beneficiaries, HRDS India will offer:

  • 15-year life insurance coverage for all family members

  • Monthly health check-ups

  • Awareness sessions on health, hygiene, education, and preventive care

  • Digital literacy and information on new government schemes

  • Free repainting of houses every five years

Identification of Beneficiaries Underway

The HRDS India team, along with the Divisional Commissioners, will work together to identify families affected by terrorism, whose houses were destroyed by militants, as well as families displaced due to floods and cross-border shelling.

Speaking at the event, Shri Aji Krishnan, Founder-Secretary of HRDS India, reiterated the organizationโ€™s commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and emphasized the transformative impact of this project on the lives of thousands.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by top officials, including Dr Mandeep K. Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor; Shri Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner Jammu; Shri Anshul Garg, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir; Ms Saritha P Menon, Administrator; Shri Swaraj Kumar G., Director Corporate Sponsorship; and Shri Sanjeev Bhatnagar, Chairman Global Initiatives, HRDS India.

This initiative stands as a powerful example of public-private collaboration for social good and sets a precedent for rebuilding lives with dignity and care in conflict and disaster-prone areas.
