A middle-aged pedestrian sustained critical injuries after being hit by an unknown vehicle on the National Highway at Barsoo area of Awantipora in south Kashmir, officials said.

The injured has been identified as Fayaz Ahmed Hajam, son of Bashir Ahmed Hajam, aged about 45 years, an inhabitant of Jamnagari area of Shopian district. The incident occurred when the unidentified vehicle struck him and fled the scene, leaving him seriously injured on the highway.

Soon after the accident, locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured man to Primary Health Centre Awantipora for immediate medical assistance. Due to the severity of his injuries, doctors at PHC Awantipora referred him to Srinagar Hospital for advanced treatment, where his condition was stated to be critical.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated efforts to trace the vehicle involved. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident.
