The All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) has urged Prime Minister to intervene for immediate implementation of a five-day work week in the banking sector.

In its letter, the confederation argued that with digital banking channels operating 24×7, Saturday branch closures would reduce commuting, cut fuel and diesel consumption, and lower the sector’s carbon footprint — aligning with the PM’s recent call for austerity and resource conservation.

AIBOC noted that institutions like RBI, LIC and Central Government offices already follow a five-day week, and that the banking industry’s wage settlement process had already accepted the proposal in principle.

The confederation sought the PM’s intervention for final policy approval at the earliest.
