Srinagar: To protest the rising incidents of braid chopping in Kashmir amidst inaction from the government, the J&K High Court Bar Association (HCBA) on Wednesday held a protest rally here.

Holding placards, the HCBA members, including several female lawyers, raised slogans against the incidents.

President HCBA, Mian Qayoom, asked the people to hold “organised protests” against the rising cases of braid chopping.

“Only then, can the enemy be defeated. Isolated protests would not yield anything,” Qayoom said, adding that the women folk in Kashmir were unsafe even in their own houses.

Saying that braid-chopping incidents had created fear among the Kashmiri womenfolk, a female lawyer asked: “Why have the incidents intensified in Kashmir only?”

It is very unfortunate that the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, has not issued even a single statement against the incidents, another female HCBA member alleged.

“Does she not have a daughter? We cannot sleep at night,” she said.

Another female lawyer said, “The hair, which is a woman’s asset, is being attacked. This is not an attack on a woman, but on the whole nation.”

Apparently pointing at the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the lawyer said, “The men in uniform have the obligation to isolate the culprits from the society.”

Asking for preventive measures to tackle the incidents, senior advocate Zaffer Shah asked, “Why isn’t any investigation carried into it?”
