Bhubaneswar, May 28  :Suspended senior BJD leader and Kendrapara Lok Sabha MP Baijanta Panda on Monday resigned from the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
“It is with deep anguish, hurt and sorrow that I have decided to quit the kind of politics into which our BJD has descended,” Mr Panda said in his three page letter to party supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Mr Panda said ‘ I will be conveying my decision formally to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to accept my resignation from that August institution upon completion of my religious obligations of bereavement. The Kendrapara MP’s father Bansidhar Panda, a noted Industrialist and close friend of late Biju Patnaik, passed away recently at the age of 87.
BJD chief Naveen Patnaik had removed Mr Panda from the party Spokesperson post on May 12 last year and suspended him from the primary membership of the party on January 24 last year for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities.
On March 16 last, party parliamentary leader Bhartruhari Mahatab wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to remove Mr Panda from Parliamentary Standing Committee and make special arrangement for his seat in the house.
The parliamentarian was facing opposition from within the BJD since the day he raised his voice against injustice and mis-functioning of the party and talked about the “officer raj” in the affairs of the party and the government.
Mr Panda was hurt when neither the Chief Minister nor any one from the government or the BJD party leaders turned up to pay their last respect to his father Banshidhar Panda,
In his three-page letter to party chief, Mr Panda cited several reasons for his decision to dissociate from the party.
He said “although things have been going from bad to worse for the past four years, it has plumbed the absolute depths of inhumanity when neither you nor anyone from the BJD turned up to pay their last respect to my father Dr Banshidhar Panda, who as everyone knows was a very close friend, supporter and associate of Biju uncle for many decades. In stark contrast, thousands of well wishers came to pay last respects including senior leaders of all other political parties.” UNI.
