Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest last night to prevent him from leading any protests in support of Article 35-A, said a spokesman.

He said the Mirwaiz was placed under detention at his Nigeen residence at 8pm.

The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik has called for a strike today and tomorrow to protest against the petitions challenging the Article 35-A.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a bunch of petitions demanding scrapping of the state subject law tomorrow.
