New Delhi, Jan 26 (UNI) Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat will be awarded the PVSM or the Param Vishisht Seva Medal the highest medal for services that do not relate to gallantry in battle to armed forces officers.
President Ramnath Kovind has approved his name for the award this Republic Day.
Normally, it is the Chief himself who awards the medal, usually to senior lieutenant generals or their equivalent in the Navy or the Indian Air Force but in this case, the nomination has come from the Defence Ministry, top government sources confirmed.
General Rawat was not awarded the PVSM when he was the Southern Army Commander or Vice Chief of Army Staff.
Normally, chiefs are appointed when they already have a PVSM.
