SRINAGAR: A Restaurant was penalized today here for exaggerated Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on packaged drinking water bottles by officials of Legal Metrology Department.

Following a complaint, a team of the Department inspected the restaurant and found that the restaurant is offering packaged drinking water to its customers at Rs 30 whereas as MRP of identical product manufactured by the same firm in the open market is only Rs. 20.

The management of the restaurant was booked for the unfair trade practice and the notice was served to the manufacturer for indulging in differential/dual MRPs of the same quantity of product in the same city.

It was said that the Department recently booked about one dozen restaurants in the city for over-charging/dual MRPs on soft drinks/mineral water bottles etc.

The management of hotels/restaurants are informed not to charge more than the MRP in their premises nor offer bottled water at exaggerated rates, a statement of the LMD said.
