Srinagar: Incarcerated pro-freedom leader, Masarat Alam Bhat has been booked under a fresh FIR registered in 2017, sources said.

Hurriyat (G) leader and Muslim League chairman, Masarat was re-arrested in the district jail Baramulla premises yesterday after a court had ordered his release on bail in a case registered under FIR No 258/2016.

He was re-arrested by a police party from Baramulla police station, sources said.

“A fresh FIR No 52/2017, U/S 120 B and 13 ULA, has been invoked against Masarat Alam,” legal secretary to Muslim League, Shah Riyaz said. He added that the said FIR stands registered at police station Baramulla.

Masarat was arrested on October 18, 2010 and since then he is behind bars barring forty days.

Masarat was released after a 53-month-long captivity on March 7, 2015. He was re-arrested on 17 April 2015 and was ordered to be detained under the PSA by the ruling PDP-BJP government.

His earlier PSA detentions were also quashed by the high court with a direction to authorities to release him. But he continues to be behind bars. (PTK)
