Seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed and eleven injured, four of them critically, on Monday evening after militants attacked government forces in Batengoo area of Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sources said that militants opened fire on the forces on Srinagar-Jammu highway in Batengoo at two places.

 Seven yatris were killed and eleven others injured during the attack, they said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Muneer Khan said the attack was aimed at forces, not on yatris.

Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani has condemned the attack. He said that the attack was a terrorist act.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Very sad news. The attack cannot be condemned strongly enough. My sympathies to the families & prayers for the injured. (sic)”
