Srinagar: Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid on Saturday claimed that a major tragedy was averted by engaging the militants in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

A militant has so far died in the ongoing gunfight in Kalghi area, he said.

Vaid said that the trapped militants were planning to launch an attack similar to last year assault on an army camp that left 19 soldiers dead.

“We have averted a major tragedy today after zeroing in on the militants in Uri. They were planning an attack on the lines of last year as seen at an army base,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function at Bakshi stadium in Srinagar.
