Srinagar:  With the death of one more militant, the total number of infiltrators killed after security forces foiled a militant attack on an Army camp in Uri sector in north Kashmir district of Baramulla yesterday has risen to four.

“Army foiled a major militant attack on its Kalgi camp in Uri sector in north Kashmir district of Baramulla by killing four infiltrators,” Deputy Commander, Uri Brigade Harpreet Singh told reporters during a press conference in Baramulla.

Giving details about the operation, he said following specific information about movement of militant in the adjoining area of Kalgi Camp in Uri late in the night of September 23, Army launched a search operation in the area in the midnight.

“Army intercepted the militants while they were moving in the area. When the encounter started, militants took shelter in an inhabitant house, where two siblings were there. They (militants) took the residents as hostages. The siblings were rescued and taken out of the house in a deliberate operation,” he said.

He said after day long fire four likely foreign militants were killed and war like stores were recovered from them.

He said while one militant was killed early yesterday morning, the remaining three militants kept moving from one house to another taking advantage of densely populated houses and maze fields.

“The houses were cleared by the Army in a deliberate operation during which the remaining three militants were also eliminated. The local mosque was cleared by police keeping sensitivity of the people in mind,” he said.

He said the search operation is still under way. “We plan to clear the whole sector,” he said.

“So far, we have recovered three bodies of the militant. The fourth body is lying there. But going by the things, he (militant) probably would have equipped himself with suicide belt. So we don’t want to endanger anyone’s life. The Bomb Disposal Squared (BDS) will first sanitize the body and then it will be taken away,” he added.

He said the fire fight was yesterday and today the body of the fourth militant was recovered.

However, Director General of Police (DGP) Dr SP Vaid earlier tweeted, “Another Pakistani terrorist located in Uri. The area has been cordoned and the encounter is on.”

“The 4th terrorist has been neutralized. Jai Hind,” he tweeted later.

Dr Vaid yesterday said the militants were planning to carry out September 18, 2016 type suicide attack on Army camp in which 18 soldiers were killed and over 20 others injured. Four Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were also killed in the encounter.
