Srinagar: Police on Friday registered an FIR into the attempted lynching of a mentally deranged youth by a mob in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore Harmeet Singh told media-persons that they have identified the persons who were trying to set ablaze Waseem Ahmad, a resident of Shrakwara area of Baramulla.

“He was surrounded by a mob of 500-800 people. They were trying to set him ablaze. Because of timely action by police, he was rescued and shifted to Srinagar in critical condition,” said Singh.

He said Ahmad is a resident of Shrakwara and also resides in Pothkhwa area of Nowpora Sopore.

“An FIR has been registered and we have identified some people after going through the videos that have surfaced on social media in which they are trying to set him ablaze,” said Singh, adding that they will soon arrest them.

Earlier, clashes erupted in Fruit Mandi area after police rescued Ahmad. They lobbed several teargas shells to disperse the protesters who were pelting them with stones.
