Pulwama, Dec 13: At least six persons were injured during violent clashes in New Colony Rohmu area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Wednesday.

    Clashes erupted after after government forces launched a cordon and search operation there.

   Eyewitnesses said that after receiving information about the presence of militants in the area, 53 Rashtriya Rifles of Indian Army, 182 and 183 Battalions of CRPF and Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off New Colony Rohmu.

    Sources said that a rumour about the presence of Hizb militant Sameer Tiger spread in the area as a result large number of youth took to roads and clashed with government forces.

   Sources added that youth made use of public address system informing people to come out from their houses and participate in the protest.

    Witnesses and reports said that at least six persons were wounded during the clashes. “Government Forces used pellets and tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters, however, they persisted and continued to target Forces with stones.”

    A police official said that despite stiff resistance shown by some local youth, the search operation continued as per routine. “The operation was called off after no contact with militants was established,” he said. (CNS)
