New Delhi, Dec 15 : To tackle pollution in the Ganga river, the National Green Tribunal on Friday imposed ban on sale and use of plastic items along the river in Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh and Haridwar towns.

The decision was taken by a bench headed by the Tribunal’s chairperson Swatanter Kumar while hearing a plea on the matter.

While observing that use of plastic items like plate and spoons pollute the Ganga river, the Green Court ordered complete ban on their sale, storage and usage.

The NGT also ordered a fine of Rs 5000 against violators.
