Srinagar, Feb 5 : Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that it would be strange if Panchayat elections were announced under pressure from the Centre in the state when government had failed to hold bypolls in Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the working president of the main opposition National Conference (NC) Abdullah said “If after this, Panchayat Elections are still announced, it will be because the Central Govt forced the State Govt to announce them. Can’t have a Lok Sabha bypoll and yet want a full Panchayat election’.

He was reacting to reports that majority of political parties favour deferring panchayat polls in the state.
