P. Sivakumar (IFS), Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board (CSB), Government of India, conducted a significant high-level meeting today at the Directorate of Sericulture Development Department in Tulsi Bagh, Srinagar. This visit is part of his official tour to Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at reinforcing the sericulture sector in the region.

The meeting, attended by key figures including Mr. Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, IAS, Director of Sericulture J&K, was a pivotal event in the development of J&K’s silk industry. Mr. Bhat presented a comprehensive overview of the department's ongoing initiatives, focusing on strategic measures to enhance cocoon production, a crucial element of the local sericulture industry. Emphasizing sustainability and innovation, the Director highlighted efforts to improve productivity and the quality of cocoons.

Significant discussions during the meeting centered on advancing the post-cocoon sector. The Member Secretary and departmental officials explored strategies to establish robust infrastructure for cocoon processing, which aims to add value within the Union Territory. This initiative is expected to not only uplift the local silk industry but also generate employment opportunities and boost the economic welfare of silkworm rearers, farmers, youth, women, and other stakeholders in the sericulture sector.

In addition to the meeting, Shri P. Sivakumar engaged directly with silkworm rearers and reelers later in the day. He listened to their experiences and concerns, assuring them of the Central Silk Board’s commitment to addressing their needs. His encouragement was aimed at motivating continued excellence in silk production and emphasized the importance of maintaining close communication with the Sericulture Development Department of J&K.

The visit and discussions mark a significant step towards enhancing J&K’s sericulture sector, focusing on improving cocoon production, quality, and overall industry development. The meeting was well-attended by various officials, including the Additional Director of Sericulture Development Department Kashmir, District Sericulture Officers of Kashmir Division, and other key personnel involved in the sericulture field.
