The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has long been a cornerstone of healthcare in the Kashmir Valley, providing world-class medical services to millions. However, the institution is currently facing significant challenges, including staff shortages, administrative hurdles, and limited resources.
With a new government now in place, there is an urgent need to prioritize the restoration of SKIMS to its former glory.
Addressing Staff Shortages
One of the most pressing issues at SKIMS is the chronic shortage of staff across various departments. The existing personnel are stretched thin, impacting the quality of care provided to patients. To ensure SKIMS operates at full capacity, the recruitment of medical professionals—including doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff—must be expedited. Equally important is the need to address the delays in promotions for senior staff, which have demoralized many skilled professionals waiting for recognition of their dedicated service.
Restoring the Engineering Department
The separation of the engineering department from SKIMS has adversely affected the institute’s infrastructure and maintenance. Without an in-house team, essential repairs and upgrades have faced unnecessary delays. Reintegrating the engineering department under SKIMS’ direct control is crucial for maintaining the high standards of care that patients deserve.
Confirming Casual Labourers’ Status
The status of 187 casual labourers who have served at SKIMS for years without formal job confirmation must also be addressed. These workers deserve job security and employment benefits for their years of dedication to the institution.
Empowering SKIMS for the Future
In recent years, SKIMS has experienced a concerning erosion of administrative autonomy. Restoring the powers of the director, particularly the ex officio secretary powers, is essential for enhancing operational efficiency and service delivery. This autonomy will enable SKIMS to function effectively, not just for Kashmir but for the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Promoting Medical Tourism
There is a significant opportunity to promote medical tourism in the region. SKIMS can provide high-quality treatment at lower costs compared to many facilities across India and abroad. Effectively marketing this advantage could position Kashmir as a viable destination for medical tourism, attracting patients from various regions and boosting the local economy.
A Call for Immediate Action
SKIMS is not merely a medical institution; it is a lifeline for the people of Kashmir. The government must recognize the vital role SKIMS plays in the region and take immediate action to restore it to its former glory. The health and well-being of millions of Kashmiris depend on it.
